The Ferry from Cape Jervis took 45 mins to cross to Penneshaw, and I, and another guest, were soon on our way to the Sea Dragon Lodge, a boutique hotel at Cape Willoughby at the eastern end of the island overlooking Pink Bay. It's set in 250 acres of bush land and is described as Tasmania's answer to an African Safari Lodge.
Large numbers of Kangaroos were in evidence close to the main building and on the slope below my 'Retreat' room balcony, 500 metres from the central hub.
The Kangaroos are suffering because of the lack of rain so the Lodge puts out extra water and sometimes food since there is very little vegetation for them to forage.
The female Kangaroos and their Joeys looked on with curiosity and allowed me to walk by but I was advised to keep at least 3 metres away.
